A short guide to caring for your stole.
Handwoven cloth lasts decades when treated kindly. Here's the short version of how we look after our own stoles.
Cotton stoles.
Hand-wash in cold water with a mild liquid detergent. Wash separately the first two or three times — handloom cottons can release a little dye. Dry flat in shade. Iron on reverse with a cotton cloth between.
Eri silk stoles.
Dry-clean for best results, or gentle hand-wash in cold water with a mild silk-safe detergent. Never wring. Roll in a clean towel to remove excess water, then dry flat in shade. Iron on low, reverse side.
Storage.
Fold loosely. Wrap in muslin or unbleached cotton. Store somewhere dry and dark — direct sunlight fades natural dyes. Refold once every few months so the same creases don't settle in.
- Cotton — hand wash, dry in shade, iron on reverse
- Eri silk — dry-clean preferred, never wring
- Wrap in muslin for storage · avoid plastic
- Refold every few months to prevent set creases
Can I machine-wash a handwoven stole?+
We recommend hand-wash only. Machine agitation weakens handloom yarn and dulls natural dyes.
How do I iron a stole?+
Iron on the reverse side, with a thin cotton cloth between the iron and the stole. Use medium heat for cotton, low heat for Eri silk.
How should I store stoles long-term?+
Fold loosely and wrap in muslin or unbleached cotton. Avoid plastic bags — natural fibres need to breathe. Refold every few months.
